Despite being closed as a commercial ski resort as of 2001, Berthoud Pass still continues to draw skiers and snowboarders alike. Only 12 miles from Winter Park, Berthoud Pass offers over 1,000 skiable acres that are accessible if you have the desire for an unforgettable backcountry experience.
As one of Colorado's first major ski areas, Berthoud Pass was opened in 1937. It boasted the first ski lift in Colorado, and in 1947 opened the first double chairlift in the United States. Since it has closed, however, Berthoud Pass does not offer any lift access. All that remains of the ski resort are some chairlift tower foundations and trails. Surprisingly, this has attracted more visitors to the area than before.
Backcountry skiers and boarders come for the numerous glades, bowls, and chutes that are often untouched. The 400 inch average yearly snowfall does not hurt either. You can ski down, and hitch a ride back up, as the pass runs right along Highway 40, just remember that backcountry conditions can be hazardous; bring an avalanche beacon, shovel, and a friend. The typical season begins in October and can go until June, still allowing some time to enjoy summer on Berthoud Pass.
The pass is part of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, a trail system composed of about 52 miles of existing trails and 30 miles of connecting routes. There are several great hikes to choose from, ranging from a short 1 mile hike to the top, or continue on the trail for a longer hike.
