Beginning at the continental divide on the west side of Berthoud Pass, in Roosevelt National Forest, the Fraser River flows north through Winter Park. The river runs parallel to Highway 40, until it meets the Colorado River 2 miles west of Granby. With enough water flowing, you can go from Winter Park to Granby, but be sure to arrange for transportation to pick you up. Wherever you decide to put in or take out, be sure not to miss the 9 miles of river that flows through Fraser Canyon.
Many people will agree that Fraser Canyon is a must see spot if you want to run the whitewater, while taking in breathtaking scenery. Just be sure you are at least of intermediate skill level, as certain parts of the Fraser require serious paddling. If you want to fish the Fraser, you will get the chance to experience a Blue Ribbon trout stream, nabbing small to medium sized fish. In this wild trout water, you can catch rainbows, browns, brook trout, and the occasional cutthroat. Finding the right spot can be tricky , since most of the fishing around Winter Park is private. Wherever the river flows through forest land, though, is fair game.
