Fly Fishing
Fly fishing in and around Winter Park, Colorado couldn't be better. Grand County has unlimited resources for great fishing, include streams, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Some of the most popular fish in the area include rainbow, German brown, brook, mackinaw and cutthroat trout. Also keep your eyes and rods peeled for kokanee salmon.
The Colorado River actually begins within Rocky Mountain National Park. Although the park is open to flyfishing, there are certain sections of the river that are inaccessible. The river is known for fishing some of the largest trout in the state.
The Fraser River runs right through Winter Park and joins the Colorado just outside of Granby. The Fraser River is Wild Trout Water and you can fish this river from Berthoud Pass into Fraser. Joining the Fraser River in town, St. Louis Creek provides almost eight miles of pristine fishable waters.
Another great fly fishing spot, although busier, is along the banks of Lake Granby, Shadow Mountain Lake, and Grand Lake. The lakes are well populated with mackinaws, rainbows, browns, and kokanee. Visitors enjoy boating and sailing on these waters as well and it is a great spot to bring the whole family.
As you can see there are so many places for fly fishing to choose from. Most streams within the Arapaho National Forest are also open to the public.
