Lake Granby
Located in Grand County, Colorado, Lake Granby is a popular lake for boating, sailing and fishing. Famous for its mackinaws, also referred to a lake trout, it also offers great trout fishing with a healthy population of rainbow, brook and brown trout, along with kokanee salmon.
Lake Granby encompasses 7,256-surface acres, and is the second largest lake in Colorado with over 10 miles in length and 42 miles of shoreline. Depths of the lake range from grassy shallows to 240 feet. Lake Granby is a fluctuating reservoir, with water levels dependant on snowfall and eastern Colorado water usage.
Known worldwide for its Mackinaw Lake Trout fishing, Lake Granby is also highly acclaimed for its reserves of wildlife on its small and scattered islands. Elephant Island is one of the many islands that provide an osprey-nesting habitat. Nesting eagles and osprey can also be seen on the Arapaho National Recreation area, which is the backdrop to Lake Granby.
Generally there are three fishing contests held on Lake Granby each year. Two are ice fishing competitions held in February and March, and the other is held in mid-May. The ice typically comes off the lake in early May and is an excellent time to fish for the big Mackinaw Lake Trout.
