No matter what trail you choose in Winter Park, keep your eye out for wildlife. Moose, elk, and deer are some of the bigger game that hikers typically come across. Black bears are also seen, so hike with caution and awareness. It is safer to hike with others and to make a lot of noise so that you do not catch a bear by surprise. Bear spray is also recommended.
When hiking or backpacking in Winter Park, make sure you bring plenty of water and food. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat. Also, it is very important to dress in layers, including a water and windproof shell, as summer weather can change rapidly without any warning. Afternoon thunder showers are common throughout Colorado during the summer, so be off mountain summits before noon.
Guided hikes are also provided by various guide services as well as through the Chamber of Commerce. Guides provide extensive information about the local flora, fauna, and history behind the beauty of Winter Park.
