Mountain Driving
Winter Park, Colorado is located 67 miles to the west of Denver. From anywhere in Denver just make your way to I-70 West which you will follow for about 40 miles until Exit 232. Follow Hwy 40 over steep Berthoud Pass and into Winter Park. Although Denver is located within a mostly flat valley, driving up and over the pass to Winter Park can be challenging for drivers not used to steep passes and winter conditions.
Mountain driving can be scenic and exciting, but it can also be dangerous. Read some of the pointers below to make your mountain excursions as enjoyable and safe as possible. First of all make sure your car is adequate for the trip by filling up on gas, making sure you have enough oil, and testing your brakes. Take your time coming down a steep mountain pass by shifting into a lower gear and not riding your brakes the whole way down. Also downshift on your way up and keep a close eye on your temperature gauge. Always give uphill cars the right of way and stay in your lane when going around corners. Carry extra water, food and blankets in case of emergencies. Most importantly be aware or your surroundings and drive safely.
