Winter Park Ski Train

In 2009, after 69 years in operation, the Rio Grande Ski Train (or Winter Park Ski Train) ceased operations. The information below is left for the visitors' historic interest. For train transportation to Winter Park from Denver, please visit our page on Amtrak's route to Granby and Fraser, CO.

Winter Park is such a wonderful place to take to the slopes, and the Winter Park Ski Train was an ideal way to get there. Beautiful vistas awaited, as lovely as any views in the Alps. Operating since 1940, the ski train had been a favorite of skiers for transportation on a scenic ride.

Starting from Union Station in Denver, riders travelled through the suburbs and entered the red rocks towering on all sides through the Front Range. Moving through many tunnels including the famous Moffat Tunnel, the train emerged on the other side to get a glimpse of the marvelous rivers and marvelous, snow-capped peaks. As the Winter Ski Train ran year-round, visitors would ride the train up to ski in the winter or hike, bike, and fish in the summer months.
